SUMMARY:Banner Exhibit Opening: 35th Anniversary of Rose Buddies
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of the Albemarle will open a banner exhibition on August 31st\, 2018 celebrating 35th years of the Rose Buddies. \nIt all started in September 1983 when Fred Fearing and Joe Kramer decided that boaters at Mariners’ Wharf should be welcomed. Fearing gathered refreshments and Kramer\, an avid rose gardener\, clipped blossoms from his garden to give to the ladies. This gathering generated such a positive response that Fearing and Kramer decided to welcome every incoming boater with the same gesture. The Rose Buddies and Elizabeth City\, the “Harbor of Hospitality\,” were on their way into waterway history. Today\, the Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau staff and volunteers carry on the 35-year tradition by cutting roses for visiting vessels and hosting the gatherings. Be sure to view the golf cart given to the Rose Buddies by Willard Scott of the Today show. \nFREE and open to the public. Contact (252) 331-4033 for more information.

SUMMARY:National Lighthouse Day - 350th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, August 7\, 2018 \nNational Lighthouse Day – 350th Anniversary Celebration \nThis year’s annual celebration of National Lighthouse Day is part of the 350th Anniversary of Chowan County\, observances will be held at the historic 1886 Roanoke River Lighthouse\, here on the waterfront in Edenton. We invite you to celebrate with us and explore how the Riverlights kept those traveling by water safe. We will have the lighthouse open free to visitors 9:30 am until 5 pm. Special hands-on activities\, games (bubbles\, sidewalk chalk\, face-painting) and chilled watermelon slices are offered. \nBuilt in 1886\, the fully restored Roanoke River Lighthouse now stands proudly in the harbor at Edenton\, NC. The lighthouse first served as a guide for ships navigating the waters of the Albemarle Sound into the Roanoke River\, and then\, after being decommissioned in 1941\, was moved by barge across the sound to private land\, where it ultimately deteriorated as a neglected residence. \nNational Lighthouse Day\, an annual commemoration of the anniversary of the federal lighthouse establishment and a day to celebrate lighthouses and the commitment and service of those who tended America’s lights for generations. \nFor the bicentennial of the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1989\, the Society petitioned Congress to declare National Lighthouse Day on August 7\, the date in 1789 that the Ninth Act of the First Congress\, establishing federal control of lighthouses\, was passed and signed by President George Washington. Sen. John H. Chaffee of Rhode Island sponsored the joint resolution\, which was championed in the House by Rep. William J. Hughes of New Jersey\, and the measure was signed by President Ronald Reagan as Public Law 100-622 on Nov. 5\, 1988. \nAll lighthouse organizations across the country are encouraged to celebrate each August 7 as National Lighthouse Day. \n9:30 am – 5 pm \nColonial Park – South Broad and West Water Streets \n252-482-2637 \ninfo@ncdcr.gov \nwww.edentonlighthouse.org

SUMMARY:Proprietary North Carolina: What’s Old and What’s New
DESCRIPTION:https://www.facebook.com/events/252510001957803/ \nLindley Butler\, PH.D. will give a talk on “Proprietary North Carolina: What’s Old and What’s New?” at the museum on Saturday\, May 12\, 2018\, 1 p.m. \nLINDLEY S. BUTLER\, PH. D.\, North Carolina history consultant will speak on his current work on the history of Proprietary North Carolina at the Museum of the Albemarle on Saturday\, May 12\, 2018 at 1 p.m. in the Gaither Auditorium. In 1668\, four precincts were formed out of the County of Albemarle\, the first governmental unit of what would become North Carolina. These four prescients (now counties)—Currituck\, Pasquotank\, Perquimans and Chowan—were later subdivided further giving rise to what we now think of as northeastern North Carolina\, the Albemarle Region. His lecture is part of the 350th Celebration of the Albemarle. \nAmong Dr. Butler’s significant contributions to the history of the state are numerous publications\, television commentaries and consultations\, and service to several historical organizations. He is author or editor of twelve books\, including Pirates\, Privateers\, and Rebel Raiders of the Carolina Coast and a widely-used college supplement\, The North Carolina Experience; as well as scores of monographs\, articles\, and reviews. He is currently engaged in writing a comprehensive history of Proprietary North Carolina\, 1629 – 1729.
